My Alexa Skill stops partway or crashes

Reopen the Alexa Skill first: many keep your progress on their side, and that is the quickest fix by far. If it keeps happening, work through the device checks below, starting with a software update and a reboot.

Sound familiar?

What to try now

  1. Reopen the Alexa Skill and continue. Many keep progress and streaks on their side, so a dropped session does not always mean lost progress. This is annoying, but it is the quickest fix of all, and if it happens rarely it is the only step worth taking. For example: “Alexa, open Puzzle of the Day”

Whether progress survives depends on the individual Alexa Skill. Work through the rest of this list if it becomes a recurring problem, or if the Alexa Skill does not pick up where it left off.

  2. Check whether your Alexa+ device has a software update waiting. On the device screen or via the Amazon Alexa app, open the device settings and check for new software. If there is an update, install it and see whether things improve. Please contact Amazon customer support for assistance if you cannot find the device settings.
  3. If there is no update, or the problem continues, restart the device: pull the plug, wait a minute, and plug it back in. Then test the Alexa Skill again. If that helps but the improvement fades over the following days, repeating the restart from time to time may be what keeps it usable.

One pattern Alexa developers describe is device resources such as memory degrading over time, which a restart clears.

  4. If a restart does not hold, or doing it repeatedly is too inconvenient, a factory reset of the Alexa+ device is the next step. That is also done from the settings on the device or in the Amazon Alexa app on your phone. Ask Amazon customer support for assistance if you cannot find the device settings.

A factory reset means setting the device up again from scratch, so it is worth trying everything above first.

  5. If you have more than one Alexa+ device in the house, try the same Alexa Skill on the other one. If it stops there too, the problem is unlikely to be that particular device, unless the two are the same model.

Alexa developers report more of these interruptions on the newest screen devices, which run Amazon's own Vega operating system, than on older devices running Fire OS. That is an observation about where problems show up, not a reason to buy a different device: this is Amazon's to resolve, and we are not suggesting anyone replace hardware to keep Alexa Skills working. It is worth knowing that which device you use may matter more than you would expect.

  6. Say this right after a session drops. Interruptions are hard to capture after the fact, so the immediate report is the valuable one. For example: “Alexa, feedback”
  7. As a last resort, Alexa+ can be rolled back to the previous Alexa. Customers have reported that Alexa Skills tend to run more smoothly there. We mention it because it is true, not as a recommendation: the goal is for these Alexa Skills to work inside Alexa+, and rolling back means giving up everything else Alexa+ added.
  8. Amazon customer service can help with any of the steps above, and can put your case on the record so an engineering team can look into it. Contact Amazon customer service.

Why is this happening?

In August 2026, customers began reporting Alexa Skill sessions that stop and restart mid-use, with progress repeating and answers needing to be given twice. The reports span unrelated Alexa Skills, which is consistent with the interruption happening in the platform session rather than inside any one of them.

Whether a single dropped session has that cause cannot be established from outside. What can be said is that the developer does not control when a session is cut: the session between you and the Alexa Skill is carried by Alexa itself.

If it only ever happens in one Alexa Skill, its developer will want to know. Their contact details are on the Alexa Skill's page in the Alexa app. Community reports so far describe interruptions across unrelated Alexa Skills rather than a problem in any single one.

When will it be fixed?

No public statement addresses these session reports as of September 8, 2026. The community issue tracker and the Updates section here will note any change.
