Nine Questions for Amazon: Seeking Clarity on the Future of Alexa Skills

The Alexa developer community has shared nine key questions with Amazon about the future of Alexa Skills. These questions remain open and are published here for transparency.

A Communication Sent in Good Faith#

On March 2, 2026, a formal communication was sent to Amazon by members of the Alexa developer community. It contained nine carefully considered questions about the current and future role of Alexa Skills in Alexa+, and the path forward for Alexa developers who have invested years, in many cases nearly a decade, building experiences for Alexa users.

To date, we have not received responses to these questions. We remain open to dialogue.

We are publishing these questions in the interest of transparency, so the broader community can see what was asked and understand that these topics remain open.

Why This Was Sent#

Alexa developers have played a key role in growing the Alexa ecosystem and delivering value to Alexa users over the years. For many, including small businesses and full-time operators, Skills represent a primary source of income and ongoing investment.

At the same time, Skills continue to be used by many Alexa users every day, and Alexa developers hear from users who are experiencing issues or a reduced quality of experience in Alexa+. Alexa developers are working to maintain these experiences, but this has become increasingly difficult with limited visibility into changes and limited structured support and communication.

We understand that priorities and strategies evolve. However, this is not only about what changes. It is also about how these changes are communicated and managed. The current level of uncertainty is significant, and clarity on these topics would go a long way toward sustaining the trust between the developer community and Amazon.

The Nine Questions#

These are the questions that were shared with Amazon on March 2, 2026:

  1. 1What level of functional stability and ongoing support can Alexa developers expect for existing Skills within Alexa+ over the next 12–24 months?
  2. 2Are there any planned changes that are expected to materially affect the functionality, discoverability, or viability of existing Skills within Alexa+ over the next 12 months?
  3. 3How will changes affecting Skills be communicated to Alexa developers, and will there be defined notice periods for changes that impact functionality, discoverability, or monetization?
  4. 4What criteria are used to prioritize fixes and improvements affecting Skills within Alexa+, and how are developer-reported issues factored into that prioritization?
  5. 5How can Alexa developers escalate issues that have a broad impact beyond individual support cases and RABs ("Report a bug")?
  6. 6Are there plans to introduce a more transparent mechanism to track reported issues, their status, and expected timelines?
  7. 7How will the transition from Skills to Alexa+ experiences ("add-ons") be managed in terms of continuity for Alexa users, and what mechanisms (e.g. migration paths, notice periods, or support) are planned to help Alexa developers adapt to these changes?
  8. 8Is there a defined process for Alexa developers to access the Alexa+ development environment (e.g. beta programs), and how can interested developers apply or be considered?
  9. 9What types of third-party experiences are expected to be supported and successful within Alexa+ (e.g. domains, use cases, or interaction models), and are there categories of experiences that may become less relevant or less applicable?

An Open Invitation#

These questions were shared in a constructive spirit: to gain clarity and support a more sustainable, transparent model for developer engagement, including ongoing support for Skills and their transition to Alexa+.

That invitation remains open. We welcome Amazon to engage with the community and provide the clarity that Alexa developers need to plan, invest, and continue building great experiences for Alexa users.
